Frederick Douglass National Historic Site
Washington, D.C.
Considered the father of the Civil Rights Movement.
This National Historic Site is dedicated to the “Father of the Civil Rights Movement” – Frederick Douglass (1818-1895). The self-educated author for the abolition cause, Douglass counseled President Lincoln and urged Black people to join the Union Army. After the Civil War, he helped many obtain citizenship and the right to vote. He purchased this house on Cedar Hill in 1877, which still has original furnishings. The site is located near the Anacostia Metro Station.
