George Washington Carver National Monument
Diamond, Missouri
Birthplace of George Washington Carver.
George Washington Carver was born into slavery during the Civil War. As a young boy, he loved the woods and was a keen observer of nature. Carver later became a renowned agricultural scientist, educator and humanitarian as he dedicated 47 years of his life to teaching and working at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
George Washington Carver National Monument recognizes his birthplace and childhood home. Established in 1943, it is the first unit of the National Park Service dedicated to an African American. Although the original home was destroyed by a tornado, the site includes a museum and a one-mile loop trail.
