Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historic Park
Church Creek, Maryland
The Underground Railroad’s best known “conductor.”
Born into slavery in the 1820s, Harriet Tubman was a deeply spiritual woman who dedicated her life to freedom. In the decades before the Civil War, she repeatedly risked her life making thirteen trips to slave territory to guide nearly seventy enslaved people to freedom in the North.
The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway preserves and recounts the life story of Tubman and her courageous actions. Originating on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, this 125-mile scenic road with more than 30 sites shows you the places where Tubman grew up, laboured, and led others to freedom. At the heart of the Byway is the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park Visitors Center.
