Scott Joplin State Historic Site
St. Louis, Missouri
Residence of Scott Joplin – The “King of Ragtime.”
Scott Joplin was born in 1868 and as a boy enjoyed playing the piano. Early in his adult life, he came to St. Louis and began playing piano in saloons. After marrying Belle Hayden in 1901, he lived here before moving to New York. Joplin earned his living as a composer and teacher. His compositions – now known as ragtime – are an important contribution to American music.
This two-story row house is now a National Historic Landmark. The home – the Joplins lived on the second floor – is now a visitor center. The exhibits depict St. Louis and the neighborhood as Joplin knew them, and additional details about his life and work. The piano player in the music room allows visitors to listen to piano rolls of his music.
Also in St. Louis near the famous Arch is the Old Courthouse. It was here in1846 where Dred and Harriet Scott sued for their freedom.
